It is a fact: Rosalia has become a mass phenomenon. It has not been because of her extra-long nails that caused a lot of controversy in the public. Nor has it been - although it has helped - her friendship with socialite Kylie Jenner. Rosalia’s secret? An urban and modern interpretation of flamenco. In her music she mixes it with trap and R&B. While she uses flamenco to differentiate herself, she subtly reintroduces it to a generations that has despised it or completely ignored it before.
In 2008 Rosalía appeared in a Spanish talent show "You Are Worth It" but she was not selected. However, being a number one is nothing new to her these days. In just over two years Rosalia has gone from anonymity to being the narrator in Harry Style’s music video, being the first Spanish to be nominated in the Best New Artist category at the 2020 Grammy Awards, to later become a winner of her first Grammy for the Best Urban or Alternative Latin Rock Album. On the list of her conquests we can also find successful performances on Coachella and winning five Latin Grammy awards in a single night. Hence, artists like J Balvin and Ozuna are eager to collaborate with the Catalan.
Although pretty much everything Rosalía sings these days becomes gold, she is becoming more and more active off the stage as well. Her outfit and appearance trigger headlines so often that brands such as YSL have started to bet on her and are choosing her image for their advertisings campaigns. She has also been increasing her popularity by collaborating with artists in various other disciplines, so in 2019 we were able to see her also on the big screens with Penelope Cruz in film Pain and Glory by renown Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar.
Rosalia preserves flamenco’s aesthetic and harmlessly transforms it for it to appeal to the upcoming generations. This is the reason why she is the new star that shines on and off the stage.
